Truly serverless decentralised applications

Distributed systems today typically live within the cloud or consist of individual devices connected to a central server or cloud. The Internet of Things and edge computing are here to change this.

Dr. Roland Kuhn is CTO and co-founder of Actyx, a Munich-based company that makes state of the art software technology accessible to small and midsize factories. He also is the main author of Reactive Design Patterns and previously led the Akka team at Lightbend.

What the attendees will learn

  • Why do we build distributed systems?
  • What are the consequences of focusing on availability and reliability?
  • How to model information flow in a decentralised system using event sourcing
  • How to use an eventually consistent decentralised event log like ActyxOS
  • Taking decisions in a distributed system based on partial knowledge

The attendees should bring a computer running Docker (Linux, macOS, Windows) and Visual Studio Code.

Android tablets may be an interesting addition.

You may start looking at for some preview information on ActyxOS.

Workshop Plan

  • Motivating example: highly available apps on the factory shop-floor
  • The working principle of an eventually consistent decentralised log
  • A primer on event sourcing
  • Publishing events and querying the log
  • Introduction to the Actyx Pond programming library
  • Writing business logic units a.k.a. Fishes
  • Deploying Fishes to solve a collaborative use-case across all attendees’ computers
